Teaching, Research and Knowledge Transfer

Chris’ teaching interests focus upon leisure, citizenship and human rights, particularly as these relate to the context of dementia. For example, Chris leads the Module ‘Engagement and Empowerment in Dementia Studies’, whose focus is upon human rights and citizenship.

Chris contributes to teaching on undergraduate and post graduate social work, sports and health courses at the ¾ÞÈéÎÞÂë. He is a member of the ¾ÞÈéÎÞÂë’s Continuing Professional Development Group. Chris also contributes to teaching and training for the Association for Dementia Studies in their commissioned education courses across the United Kingdom.

The LINK Group:

Between October 2013 and October 2016, Chris facilitated the LINK Group. The LINK Group is comprised of people living with dementia, and carers for people with dementia, as part of the Association for Dementia Studies, at the ¾ÞÈéÎÞÂë. Group members contributed through sharing their experiences of living with dementia with those enrolled on teaching and training programmes at the ¾ÞÈéÎÞÂë, and across the United Kingdom. They established a national and international reputation for their educational work and were affiliated with the Dementia Engagement and Empowerment Project (DEEP).

In 2016-2017 Chris was project leader for the LINK Film Project. The project created a set of films, tailored to the needs of the education and training provided by the Association for Dementia Studies and the wider University. The films draw upon the authentic voices of people affected by dementia, i.e. directly from the accounts of members of the LINK Group.

Research Interests

Chris’ research interests relate to leisure, citizenship and human rights, particularly in the dementia context.

During 2021-2022 Chris led a research project funded by the Leisure Studies Association and Active Hereford and Worcestershire, to design, develop, deliver and evaluate a distance learning training course for care and sports staff to support the delivery of physical activity for people living with dementia and their families: Championing Physical Activity for People Affected by Dementia. The course has been running successfully since that time.

In 2023/24 Chris was patient and public involvement lead for the research project ‘Get Real with Meeting Centres: a realist evaluation of locally driven social care for those affected by dementia’, funded by the National Institute for Health Research.

Chris is a co applicant and is responsible for translation of findings for non-nursing audiences/curricula, in Crossing the Line research project, funded by the National Institute for Health Research.

Chris completed his PhD: Russell, C., (2016-2020), “Because life’s there…understanding the experience and identity of people living with dementia in the context of leisure and fitness centres.”. The ¾ÞÈéÎÞÂë. Chris was supervised by Professor Dawn Brooker, Dr Geoff Kohe, and Dr Shirley Evans. Findings from the study inform the teaching and training offered by the ¾ÞÈéÎÞÂë across a range of courses and programmes.

Between October 2013 and June 2016, Chris led a research project exploring the experiences of people with dementia teaching as Tutors at the University, the Expert by Lived Experience Tutor Initiative. This provided new insight into aspects of the lived experience of dementia, including diagnosis, citizenship and personhood. The initiative also enabled a greater understanding of how teaching that relates to the lived experience of dementia could be improved and given greater integrity.
